✅Someone’s Always Listening—Even at Night

🎯One quiet sentence, overheard by the wrong person, can echo for years.

🧠 Kick Your Life™: Wisdom from Korea – Week 4

“Birds hear the words by day, and mice hear the words by night.”

낮말은 새가 듣고 밤말은 쥐가 듣는다

💬 A Note from Master Chris Hong

Hello parents & teachers,

There’s something mysterious about words.
Once we speak to them, they’re no longer ours to keep.

Whether it’s a careless joke, a complaint behind someone’s back, or a moment of frustration…
What we say has a way of finding ears—even when we think no one’s listening.

This week’s Korean proverb reminds us of that:

“Birds hear the words by day, and mice hear the words by night.”

In other words:
There’s always someone listening.

Especially our children.

A Real-Life Moment

A mom once told me she was venting about her child’s schoolwork to her husband late at night, thinking her daughter was asleep.

The next morning, her daughter asked quietly,

“Mom… do you think I’m lazy?”

She was crushed.
She hadn’t meant for her daughter to hear those words.

But she did.
Because children are always listening… even when we don’t realize it.

📖 This Week’s Korean Wisdom

This proverb isn’t just about gossip—
It’s about integrity, awareness, and setting the tone in our homes and schools.

If we want our children to speak kindly, listen respectfully, and treat others with care…
We have to model that in how we speak, especially when we think no one is watching.

🛠️ Try This with Your Family or Classroom

Ask your children or students:

  • Have you ever overheard something that made you feel happy… or hurt?

  • What do you think happens when someone hears words not meant for them?

Then do a “Listening Test Day”:

  • Try speaking all day as if someone younger or more sensitive is always listening.

  • At the end of the day, talk about what changed, especially in tone, patience, and word choice.

Your Weekly Kick Plan

This week, be mindful of your voice in quiet moments:

  • Notice what you say when you’re tired or frustrated

  • Practice pausing before saying something critical

  • Speak about others the way you'd want to be spoken about

  • Reflect: Would I say this if someone I care about were listening?

🌿 Remember

Words don’t disappear after we say them.
They echo—sometimes in hearts we didn’t expect.

Speak with care. Someone is always listening.

After reading the Shoe Shelf Challenge, a mom wrote:
“We didn’t just fix the mess — we fixed the tone. I stopped yelling, and he started trying. That’s worth more than clean shoes.”
